A New Direction for New Brighton

Congratulations to Sharon Doffing and Gina Bauman on their convincing election victories last night. Well done, ladies!

Not only did these candidates win, but the vote margins are telling (see G-Man's summary below). Both ran on stopping the city's abuse of eminent domain, bringing local government spending under control, and the need to rejuvenate the long stagnant business environment. The new council will have a make-up more conducive to getting New Brighton moving in the right direction with the ouster of Kim Moore-Sykes.

Mayor Steve Larson can't be too happy with the poor showing of Moore-Sykes, one of his staunchest allies on the current council and the only candidate he endorsed. He also can't be too thrilled with the number of write-in votes cast for mayor (nearly 10% of the total) in his unopposed run.

Mr. Larson and the other members of the New Brighton City Council had better take heed in that the people of New Brighton are not happy with the current direction of the city and this election may be the start of a larger house cleaning.
