Minnesota Legislative Session Eve

With the Minnesota Legislature about to begin the 2006 session it was announced today that the state will begin the session with a net surplus of about $88 million more than previously anticipated. Hopefully our public servants will resist the urge to view the windfall as “free” money that has to be spent, though I can't honestly say that I expect this to happen.

Even before the session has started there is talk of stadiums, more money for education, and more intrusion into the day-to-day lives of the people. For example, there is a proposal going around talk radio that the do-gooders in Saint Paul are considering requiring booster seats for children up to 9 years old. There is also a proposal for doubling traffic fines if one is caught talking on a cell phone while committing some other offense. I'm afraid to imagine what other silliness is being contemplated that hasn't been made public yet.

Those of you out there in the “legislative community”, please take note: forget the touchy-feely nonsense and address the serious problems this state faces (out of control taxation and spending, illegal immegration, over regulation, are good to start with).

Remember, this is an election year...
