It's the Security, Stupid

Late last year, Democrats started whining about the Patriot Act and did everything in their power to obstruct it.

Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid even bragged that they "killed the Patriot Act."

Thanks to Patriot Act, we have not had a single act of terrorism on U.S. soil since 9/11. Further, while Democrats whine about the alleged loss of civil rights, they have failed to produce a single case where the Patriot Act was misused. This is not to say there isn't room for improvement, but you don't improve a successful program by killing it.

A couple months ago, Democrats started whining about foreign surveillance by the NSA (National Security Agency). They fraudulently called it domestic spying, implying that the NSA is listening to your daily phone calls. But, the only eavesdropping authorized by the President is on foreign phone numbers of known terrorists. It is only when these terrorists call an ally inside the U.S. that a U.S. phone may be involved.

Still, Democrats are on record opposing the eavesdropping of phone calls made by Al Qaeda operatives who are overseas. Moreover, by their grandstanding, Democrats have tipped-off Al Qaeda that their phone calls were being monitored. (Could Al Qaeda have a better ally?)

Now, Democrats and a few Republicans are whining about the sale of the London-based Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Co. to Dubai Ports World from the United Arab Emirates. Early media reports claimed that President Bush was "selling U.S. ports" to a nation formerly known to be "terrorist friendly." As is often the case, this early headline was way off base. As we learn more about this sale, we learn the following:
  • There are no ports for sale, only a company which manages the loading and unloading at the docks.
  • Security on the docks is managed by the U.S. Coast Guard – not the company that uses the docks. POSN is not currently responsible for security on the docks – nor would DP World be responsible for security.
  • There are no U.S. based companies that perform this service.
  • No personnel will change. The same union workers who work at the docks for POSN will do so for DP World.
  • When terrorists last infiltrated U.S. "ports", the "ports" that were infiltrated were managed by U.S. owned companies in Boston's airport on 9/11.
  • After the 9/11 attack, President Bush issued a notice that "you are either with us, or with the terrorists." UAE was one of the first to join us in the War On Terror.
What is most curious about the uproar regarding the POSN sale, is the reaction by Democrats. Many are running with this issue as “champions of National Security.” But, how can you truly champion National Security after obstructing the Patriot Act, tipping off Al Qaeda regarding eavesdropping, and now dissing one of our Arab allies in the War on Terror?
