News Flash: Conservatives Also Have First Amendment Rights!

Ann Coulter is under media attack for having the unmitigated audacity to exercise her right to free speech. In a speech at the Conservative Political Action Conference this weekend Ms. Coulter made the following statement:
I was going to have a few comments on the other Democratic presidential candidate, John Edwards, but it turns out you have to go into rehab if you use the word “faggot,” so…
Coulter's statement was probably a commentary on the hypersensitivity shown by those on the left over the recent statements of former NBA player Tim Hardaway and actor Isaiah Washington. In both cases the purveyors of political correctness in the liberal media came swarming in to make life miserable for the perpetrators of such heinous infractions.

Unfortunately the media fallout over Coulter's statement is not only coming from whiney liberals (as expected) but also from conservatives who are obviously intimidated by the threat of negative PR if they don't denounce Ms. Coulter. Liberals are the first ones to demand their free speech rights, but when a conservative exercises his or her rights libs seem to think that they have a right not to be offended. Maybe it's one of those penumbral "rights" that only an activist liberal judge can find in the Constitution.

Ann Coulter's statement may have been in poor taste. It definitely was not politically correct. But it was a long time in coming. As a conservative who has grown tired of double standard of de facto speech codes for conservatives while liberals get away with saying whatever they want without real consequence, I feel a small amount of satisfaction in the way that Ms. Coulter stood up and put the libs and their political correctness in their place. Much like the way I felt when Vice President Cheney put the miserable excuse for a Senator Patrick Leahy in his place a couple of years ago.
