Political Organizing, Union Style

You know how the unions seem to turn out their troops in large numbers on election day? Ever wonder how they do it, how they're able to contact and energize their people? It's fairly simple, actually, particularly when it comes to public sector unions. Contacting them is as easy as opening the state email list and blasting out a message to their state government email accounts.

It's all perfectly legal to use government resources for such activity - the DFL made sure of it years ago (and Republicans didn't have the stones to stop the practice).

Currently, AFCSME is using state computers to lobby for passage of the inaptly named Employee Free Choice Act, a bill that would eliminate the secret ballot used by employee groups to authorize unionization. Specifically, they are urging their membership to contact Senator Coleman and pressure him to support this undemocratic legislation:

Support Workers' Right to Organize

The U.S. House has passed the Employee Free Choice Act (EFCA) that will
make it easier for workers to organize a union. EFCA will be coming up
for a vote in the U.S. Senate. DFL U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar has pledged
to vote for EFCA, but Republican U.S. Sen. Norm Coleman has so far
failed to make that commitment.

Please call Sen. Norm Coleman today at 1-800-774-8941 to tell him to
support the Employee Free Choice Act. We also have postcards you and
your co-workers can send in to Norm's office; you can get them from your
union rep or political organizer, or by dropping by or calling your
AFSCME Council 5 office. Click here to also take action via email.

For more information call your northern MN organizer [deleted] at

Thanks for your help helping other workers to organize!

This is simply another instance where Republicans, while in power, did nothing to defund and defang their enemies. Money was thrown at the public schools and the unions that control them, for no political benefit. And the unions were permitted to continue spending taxpayer money on organizing activities. It's an outrage, but it won't be getting any better anytime soon.
