Clinton vs Clinton

Rich Lowry has a terrific article analyzing Hillary Clinton's recent "on your own" economics address. It reads like a campaign primer on how to run against her in 2008, documenting the many ways that Hillary's current positions run counter to the positions taken by her husband's administration. The bottom line of it all is this:
The real news from Clinton’s speech is the way she, in keeping with the leftward shift of her party, turns her back on her husband’s actual policies.
From trade to welfare reform to Medicare reform to investment tax cuts - Hillary Clinton takes a stance completely at odds with those which Bill took as President. Lowry concludes with the following:
One can only conclude that if you liked the 1990s boom, don’t elect this woman.
Sounds like a great slogan for the 2008 GOP candidate.

That actually made me laugh out loud!

I love it.

Did anyone expect her to not be left of her husband? I mean really, did they?

As bizarre as all this sounds, I do think it is consistent for the Clintons. Bill Clinton never stood on issues and principles; he took stands on polls – whatever was popular at the moment.

Remember National Health Care in 1993. When the Republicans swept into the House in the 1994 mid-term elections on their “Contract with America”, President Bill Clinton quickly saw that he was on the wrong side on the issues. National Health Care was scraped over-night and welfare reform was signed into law. These were the popular issues of the day.

Today, as you noted, the Democratic Party was drifted further left. And with it, Hillary’s positions have moved to the left in order to stay popular.

It’s classic Clinton-ism: polls before positions.
