Ron Paul's Dreamers

I have argued on these pages that the "consider the alternative" argument no longer carries force with conservatives, sick of being talked into voting for party hacks because the Dem would be worse. An excellent example can be found in the "Is 2008 the New 1964?" post by John Derbyshire at NRO's Corner. Mr. Derbyshire is giving us the full e-mail from a Ron Paul supporter, and his reasoning is compelling.

After an early flirtation with Mr. Paul's attractions, I decided I couldn't vote for the man when he seemed to betray a very fundamental misunderstanding of the Islamists at one of the first candidate debates. As far as I can tell, Mr. Paul actually believes we'd be left alone if we weren't meddling in various locations in the Middle East. It's impossible to say what would be if only, but it seems exceedingly unlikely that people who think that salvation depends on not only their own outward works, but also on forcing others to keep the same standards, will be satisfied with sitting quietly at home, once they've expelled the infidel from the ancestral hall. Still, in so many ways, not least for the coniptions he'd inspire on the left, his presidency is an inspiring thought--unlike imagining a President Romney or Giuliani.

Thanks for keeping us updated on your RP flirtation.

Ron Paul's repeated references to "neo-cons" during the Sunday morning Stephanopolous debate was nauseating. I would have booed him had I been there. Despicable.

It's time to winnow the field to McCain, Romney, Rudy, Huckabee, and Hunter (and Fred if he ever chooses to run).
