As If New Brighton Politics Doesn't Have Enough Problems...

This report from the AP via KSTP pretty much speaks for itself:

ST. PAUL (AP) - St. Paul police have arrested a New Brighton City Council member in an undercover prostitution sting.

Council member David Phillips was cited for engaging in prostitution. The St. Paul Pioneer Press reports that the 58-year-old was one of nine men cited Monday in the sting.

Police didn't provide details of the sting because it's ongoing.

Phillips was elected to the city council last year. New Brighton is north of St. Paul.

Mayor Steve Larson tells the Pioneer Press he is unsure how the city council will respond to the incident. He calls the case a "disaster."

For the first time in a long while I agree with Mayor Larson, although with the caveat "if the allegation is true".

Police, as well as council members, come from the human race and do make honest mistakes at times. Although the news is disturbing, we need to wait until the legal process plays out until making a final judgment. Please keep in mind that such an incident, whether proven in the end to be completely true or completely baseless, brings down a lot grief not only on the person being investigated but also on members of their families and their friends and associates who had nothing to do with it.

I supported David Phillips for the council in spite of his overall liberal views because in the areas that mattered in New Brighton he was very reasonable and thoughtful. I hope that this incident turns out to be an honest mistake on the part of the police, but if it turns out Mr. Phillips did make a mistake he will need to bear the full consequences for his actions.

If Mr. Phillips is innocent he will be owed an apology and he, as well as his family, will need the support of his friends and associates as even the mere accusation of what he has been charged with can be devastating.
