Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed

Picked up a copy of the DVD Saturday for a tour through the academic persecution of Intelligent Design proponents. This is not a full review so I’ll just give some initial impressions.

First. it is clear that any professor who even mentions Intelligent Design in class, much less cites a paper on it, is in big trouble with the academic establishment. Several “expelled” professors are interviewed and their stories told. Ben Stein is the ideal interviewer to make their persecution appear to be unutterably ridiculous. Frequent visual allusions to the building of the Berlin Wall help us understand that academic freedom is being heavily suppressed.

The money shot for me occurs in a nondescript coffee shop Ben interviews Stephen C. Meyer, a key Intelligent Design researcher. This is not verbatim, but Ben says to Meyer something like this in his patented deadpan way:

“What makes you think you can challenge the greats of science – like Newton and Darwin who are buried in the genius corner of Westminster Abby -- while you’re sitting here in a coffee shop with no sign?”

Anyway, Ben Stein is a delight and just the right person to handle this subject. He admits this is just a start and invites others to pick up the ball on Intelligent Design and free speech as well as academic freedom.

Ben Stein is a respected economist, columnist, actor, and humorist. He was unforgettable as the monotone teacher in Ferris Bueller, asking, “Anyone? Anyone?”

The DVD is both fun and thought-provoking but be forewarned. It could drive a liberal academic up the wall.
