Leroy Schaffer As Folk Hero

Leroy Schaffer is the St. Francis City Council member who was under fire last summer for his comments about Spanish-speaking roofers. He called police hoping they would investigate whether they were illegal aliens.

Instead, the cops must have tipped off a reporter who ambushed him and got him to make some angry replies on camera. Ultimately, that gave his enemies the chance to call for a recall election.

Schaffer foiled them again by winning the recall and his seat on the council!

I see Schaffer as a person exercising his rights of free speech and his rights as a citizen.

Unfortunately, Schaffer is a little rough around the edges, and probably would not make a great ambassador. Still, his instincts are right.

In regards to the Spanish-speaking roofers, what are the odds that some were illegal? We’re not talking the lottery here, with million-to-one odds. A good guess is that almost certainly some in the group were undocumented and if that was the case, almost certainly other crimes had been committed by those undocumented. All Schaffer was asking is that law enforcement check into it. I’m sure the police have been asked to check into things a lot less serious.

Unlike Schaffer, many citizens have dropped their guard, thinking that illegal aliens are someone else’s problem. I’m sure that the Olga Franco case was fresh in his memory.

If Shaffer's instincts were wrong, the cops would have told the roofers to have a nice day after checking them out and life would go on - no harm, no foul.

Such an experience may have even helped to encourage the workers to learn to speak English, the language of our local culture.

What are the odds you've had a meal cooked, a hotel roomed clean, or your trash picked up by an illegal immigrant? Probably higher than your IQ.

Instincts are right? I don't know about this issue with illegal immigrants but the man is a mental midget at Bachmann's town hall:
